The story according to history is that during the 1950’s Bananas Foster was created when bananas were being shipped from Central and South America. And the port of entry into the United States of America was the city of New Orleans in the state of Louisiana.
As the story goes a new culinary dessert named Bananas Foster was created in New Orleans in 1951 by the now infamous Chef Paul Blange’. This heavenly dessert has now become a universal dessert around the world. So it’s no surprise that you will find this dessert on the menus of the best listed restaurants from coast to coast as well as from ocean to ocean.
Here in California these table side flambe’s are not allowed anymore due to the city ordinances. If you’re lucky enough to find a restaurant still performing this table side presentation, enjoy it.
Otherwise here’s a recipe that you can serve at home and enjoy!
Easy Bananas Foster
Ingredients:
- 4-6 Bananas cut in half and quartered
- 1 Quart of French vanilla ice cream
- 1 stick of butter
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- ½ tsp of cinnamon
- 1 cup dark rum
Preparation:
- Start with heating your pan on med low heat, combine the butter, sugar and allow them to soften and melt into a liquid. Next add in the banana quarters and allow them to bath in the mixture.
- Just before you are ready to serve, add the rum and let everything cook for a moment so that the bananas absorb the flavors of the mixture.
Here’s where the presentation of cooking comes into place.
- Remove your skillet from the stove and be sure you are not standing over the pan.
- Tip your pan so that the liquid moves to the front of the pan and ignite the liquid.
- Lower your pan slowly so that the flames encircle the bananas for just a minute or two.
- As the rum evaporates the flames will die down and you are ready to serve.
Serve:
Have your dessert bowls ready with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and place the banana quarters on top of the vanilla ice cream. You can get into your gourmet mode with this dessert dish by leaning the bananas against the vanilla ice cream. Spoon some of the sugar mixture over the bananas and serve.
If you're serving on a flat plate, drizzle some of the sugar mixture around the plate, place the vanilla ice cream to the side or the center of the plate and arrange your bananas. Finish off the plate with a drizzle of the sugar mixture on top of the bananas and you have your own Bananas Foster's creation!
Enjoy!
