Tradition calls for a crust, however, there’s always an alternative when you’re in hurry or just prefer to serve this dish naked. Going crustless is a timesaver, but it will also save on some unwanted calories without any loss of taste or flavor.
The basic ingredients for a quiche are eggs, milk and cheese, which are staples in just about every kitchen. Quiche is a recipe with some history of its own. In olden days; the bottom was made of bread dough, the crust was replaced with a pastry crust as we know it today.
It's an oven baked pie that is similar to custard because of the amount of eggs and milk used in the dish. The secret to speed baking this dish is that most recipes call for the vegetables to be precooked. Precooking your added ingredients makes quiche a dish that can be prepared ahead of time and baked just before you are ready to serve it.
History
The quiche is known as a classic French cuisine recipe but history records the quiche with German origins. At the time the countryside was under German rule and the French would later rename the area Lorraine, giving birth to Quiche Lorraine.
The original Quiche Lorraine was an open pie with an egg and milk custard filling and smoked bacon. Variations of the dish began to surface in the different regions of France and cheese was later added to the dish.
Variations
Today we see quiche as a regular menu item served for breakfast with coffee in our local cafes, with a crisp salad for lunch and it even holds its own as a dinner entrée. Whether you are preparing breakfast, lunch or dinner, here are some favorite meat and vegetable combinations that you can enjoy.
- Ham, green peppers and onions - slice and saute together
- Spinach and mushroom - saute together, frozen spinach works in this quiche
- Bacon and tomatoes - cook the bacon, slice your tomatoes and set aside
